Love ‘em or hate ‘em, Top 10 lists are a staple in today’s blogs and social networks. As a domainer, it may not be a good idea to be so quick to dismiss them.
So here is a non-watered down Top 10 list of why domainers should read top 10 lists:
6- Authoritative sites reinforce trends.
If the list was written or published by an authority on the subject, it can be highly influential no matter how accurate it is. When Forbes publishes it’s Top 10 Places to Buy Foreclosed Homes, you can count on it. You should always do your homework to verify information, but even if Charlotte isn’t the top place to buy a foreclosed home, Forbes has reinforced the trend.
5- Popular sites reinforce trends.
When Time publishes their 50 Top 10 Lists of 2007, you can bet that every one of those lists is getting tons of traffic. Traffic that, perhaps subliminally, feels Time has already vetted these sites\lists in some way. Time is reinforcing any actual or perceived trends with their authoritative endorsement.
4- They predict future trends.
People love predicting the future. You can find many posts like the Top 10 Upcoming Movies Based on Video Games. With monstrous franchises like Metroid, Warcraft, Street Fighter and Castlevania being adapted, could this replace superheroes as the next movie trend?
3- Blogs and social networks are not only a breeding ground for these lists, they provide additional info.
People love to add their two cents to Top 10 lists. This, at times, reveals much more than a top 10. The game movie post from #4 made the front page on Digg, where we learn that Splinter Cell, Assassins Creed, Gears of War, God of War, Mech Warrior, Mortal Combat, Soul Calibur and Prince of Persia are all being put on the silver screen. Not only does this reinforce the trend implied in the list, it can provide additional new ideas for niches.
2- They are a geodomain goldmine.
Some feel that geodomains are more than just a trend. You can find an outrageous amount of domains from geographical lists: Family beaches, tech towns, public golf courses, health retreats, music cities, home life, investing and places you got to see. You can pluck scores of geo+keyword domains from these lists alone.

Whether the list consists of current things or anticipated things, you can get a niche idea from just about any of them. Gadgets, travel, technology, beauty and food; niches within niches.
