The New Retro, Brought To You By Generation X

The Baby Boomers are retiring and Generation X is fixing to take over the workplace. Generation X is defined as those born from 1965 to around 1978-1982.

If you look closely, you can see the transition. All of our- I say “our” because I come in at the tail end of Gen X- classic rock songs are appearing in commercials; particularly in the auto industry. The Who has been exploited beyond belief with about eight different songs you can find in various commercials and TV shows. Led Zeppelin and Queen have also been overly used. They’ve even tapped into Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Steppenwolf and others.

But when I heard Blue Oyster Cult’s Godzilla and Motorheads’ Ace of Spaces, I about dropped dead. Seriously, since when does a Motorhead song get used in corporate advertising?

Sure, these are Baby Boomer groups, but the Boomers are too conservative to do something like this. The early Gen Xers, who listened to these groups as young teens, are making these ads to appeal to other Gen Xers.

My point is, with Gen X taking over you can fully expect things from our childhood to hit mainstream again, especially the ’80s. In fact, it’s already happening; things like Transformers, G.I. Joe, skateboarding, DeLoreans, Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake, Lego, Rubik’s Cube, Muppets, NES, ’80s movies, Pee Wee, Mr. T and other ’80s icons will be back again.

Again, you need to get creative and avoid the trademarks. The ’80s are such a huge niche. There are so many opportunities here for domainers, flippers and developers.

The ’80s are the new retro.
