The Death Of Newspapers Is The Birth Of Nichepapers

The death of the modern day newspaper has been long predicted. Microsoft’s CEO chimes in to predict this will happen within 10 years. Wired shows that you don’t exactly want to buy newspaper stocks. There’s even a site that chronicles the death: NewsPaperDeathWatch.com.

This article on TrendBird goes into detail the slow death of the newspaper and what the companies are trying to do to survive. 48% of newspaper editors are “conflicted” over the internet. That spells doom. If they don’t embrace it and jump on board, they will go down with the ship.

But in the end, I only partially agree. I agree that the higher you are, the farther you fall. I don’t see bright futures for the print editions of the Wall Street Journal, New York Times or London Times.

On the other hand, I see a bright future for nichepapers (the .coms were taken). I am in full agreement with psfk.com when they say that magazines and newspapers will merge into one and cover very specific niches, like domaining.

This is closely related to other trends:

  • Everything going local
  • Everything going personal
  • Longtail keywords

They all lead to one result: the EXACT information that YOU are looking for and pertains to YOU, not Bob the carpenter in Spokane. This is the way of the immediate, and foreseeable future.

    Long story short, basically yes: magazines. That was the point of the PSFK article: that magazines haven’t been hit hard by the internet the way newspapers have, and that you will see the two merge into one.

    We already see magazines for the most odd things. But I feel it will go far beyond what we have now.
