A Recap Of Past Articles Shows TrendDomaining.com Knows Its Trends
I suppose this is a ‘toot your own horn’ type of post. I want to use my accuracy to show why TrendDomaining.com is worth reading. This blog is just one month old, and judging trend predictions after just one month isn’t entirely ideal. But I think I hit a few bullseyes here. Below is a list of news articles from authority sites that strongly support my trend predictions AFTER I made them. Most of these articles are from strong authority sites.
Sites like BoingBoing, Mashable, Gizmodo, Digg, Wired and Rueters are considered mainstream news on the internet. The NY Times and LA Times are strong both in print and on the net. If something hits the front page on any of these sites, it’s a hit.
May 25th - Hypermiling
I hit my first bullseye on my 6th post. Several of the domain names I posted are now registered. The Google search results have exploded. Articles about this new trend have made front page of just about every news site worth a lick. I drive about 150 miles a day and I’ve run into a few (frustrating) hypermilers on the road.
- #1 blog, according to Technorati, Huffington Post reports on hypermiling.
- CleanMPG.com has been bombarded with visitors.
- Reported by NY Times.
- Reported by NPR.
- The LA Times talks about the hypermiling trend.
- Excellent car site Edmunds reports on hypermilers.
- Washington Post has adventures in hypermiling.
- I’ve received loads of organic traffic looking for hypermiling keywords.
- This all just WEEKS after my claim that hypermiling would be the next big thing.
June 1st - Astronomy Trend
I was dead on. But this was an easy one that many saw coming. Still, there has been some big news in just 20 days since my post.
- Ice discovered on Mars, from Wired.
- CNN reports on Google’s race to the moon.
- A new Japanese company is selling weddings in space.
- Popular Mechanics article on how big business is ready to spend money on space.
- This Rueters article focuses on a Japans new project to search for alien life.
June 13th - Personal Solar Power
Again, this one wasn’t very difficult to predict. There have been numerous solar power reports in the news, most notably:
- CleanTechnica.com reports that 10% of the U.S. will be on solar energy by 2025.
- The Solar Bag reported by EcoGeek.
- EcoGeek also reported on the solar briefcase.
June 10th - Lego is back!
This trend is here to stay for a long time. With several of the top blogs being techie blogs (or having tech sections), Lego will always be there.
- On Gizmodo, a video of Lego Stormtroopers.
- Official Lego Death Star, As reported on Gizmodo, BoingBoing and many other sites. OMG! $400!
- The Lego snacks from my list was reported by NetworkWorld.
- Lego business cards used by Lego employees, from Gizmodo.
- [I had to add this] Amazing huge Space Shuttle set. (See Astronomy trend)
June 8th - 80’s Retro
Aside from the obvious Legos, other 80’s hits are in the news:
- Mr Potato Head crosses over to other 80’s hits.
- Rubik’s Cube alarm clock from Make.
June 7th - Zeppelins
This hasn’t hit any big sites yet, but has been reported on smaller sites.
- AirShipWorld reports on the Zeppelin NT.
June 6th - Untooning
- Pixeloo’s newest untoon is Niko Bellic of Grand Theft Auto fame. This one he did on commission for big media: Playstation Magazine UK.
June 5th - DeLoreans
I think this one will get bigger and bigger as the year goes on, especially when they start rolling off the assembly line.
- The NY Times talks about the DeLorean.
- The DeLorean car show is happening right now!
June 4th - Virtual Mannequin
I said that it will hit the U.S. soon, I was wrong; it’s already here.
- Mashable reports on StyleShake, a site where you can design and try on clothes.
May 30th - Daytrips
As long as gas prices are up, these will remain popular.
- Affordable daytrips, from Readers Digest.
- Here in Houston, there have been many commercials on the radio for local scooter dealers.

Domainers Can Still Find Unique Niches, Even In Flooded Markets
Domainers are always looking for that unique niche that they can be the authority on (either with a domain name or a full- or mini-site). You may see an overcrowded niche like ringtones or movies and turn the other way. But with a little creative thinking you can find a unique angle to an oversaturated niche.
In the early 1990’s, movie theater megaplexes began sprouting up everywhere. 15 years later, you don’t live anywhere unless your town has a megaplex.
Now, will you believe me when I say the next big thing will be single-screen theaters? Microtheaters, or microcinemas, already exist. And a few of them are quite successful.
The word microcinema often refers to low-budget indie short films produced entirely by a small crew or single person. But this newer definition is more akin to microbrewery. Due to the confusion between the two, microtheater may be a more appropriate name.
Microtheaters are geared towards movie buffs; people who may see movies as an art form, and perhaps like to get a little analytical. A microtheater may provide an actual home cooked meal, as opposed to a hotdog and nachos. Theater seating has greatly improved since megaplexes arrived, but a microtheater would go further and have chairs you wouldn’t mind placing in your own living room. After the movie is over, a microtheater audience would lounge around and discuss what they’ve just seen, as opposed to pouring out into a parking lot.
And a microtheater may be located in a converted garage next to the owners house, as opposed to a building as big as a Walmart. Don’t take ‘converted garage’ the wrong way, these can be full blown top-notch theaters.
This obviously isn’t for everyone. But, like anything, it’s a niche that could be quite successful; as proven by The Aurora Picture Show in Houston, who will soon be celebrating their 10 year anniversary.
This is an untapped niche; I couldn’t find a single decent site with information on these great hidden treasures. This is proof that you can still find niches nobody has touched yet, even in the oversaturated market of movies.

Both Presidential Candidates Agree On Controversial Research
This is not a political post. I want to stay away from politics, unless it’s directly related to domaining… which this is.
Republicans and Democrats don’t agree on too many things. But there is a controversial topic- one that the two parties have fought over previously- that these two upcoming candidates mostly agree on and could spell a big boom for the medical industry in many different ways.
That would be stem cells.
Both Barack Obama and John McCain support federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research, each voting in favor of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005, which ultimately was vetoed.
Barring a catastrophe, we’re going to see one of these two as the next U.S. President, and you can bet that a new bill will be written for the winner to sign.
Stem cell related keywords will be big, as will the resulting medical discoveries of such research. As a domainer, keep an eye out on related breakthrough news and be hasty registering those names.

TrendDomaining.com Survives First Month, Anticipating Many More
It’s been one month since my first post, and I am quite pleased with how well things are going so far. My many thanks to those who’ve spent time, and/or commented, on this blog.
I have received some positive feedback on the site design, layout and color scheme. The criticisms I had were a long-ish front page and lack of pictures. The picture problem was easily solved. I did cut off a few longer posts, but I think I’m satisfied with the length of the front page as other domaining blogs are much longer.
Any feedback, positive or negative, is greatly appreciated. More precisely, I am looking for suggestions on what you would like to see covered more, or less, on this site. So what do you like? Not like?
Finally, have you registered any domain names due to any articles on this site?
Again, thanks for your time.
-Scott
